The iFixit service, which assesses the degree of service vulnerability of electronic devices, looked at new iPhone models. It turned out that they can be dismantled and then even re-assembled ...;)
iFixit technicians dismantled the parts of the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max, but eventually decided that both devices will be assessed together, because the process of their disassembly and replacement elements is virtually identical. The phones received above average rating, which is 6 out of 10 points.
Apple was praised for limiting the gluing of elements and the wide use of screws. Replacing the display and the battery is easy and does not create problems, the Face ID module can be separated from the display module and replaced separately. A certain difficulty may be only the sealing of the housing, but on the other hand they limit the possibility of damage to the phone due to flooding. Bad news awaits users who break glass on the back of the casing. It is combined with the support frame, so its replacement is connected with disassembling the whole phone and exchanging a larger part of the body, which will certainly be time-consuming - that is, expensive. It was also noted that Apple still uses atypical screw heads, which forces the purchase of specific tools for disassembly.
Technicians also had a look at the new smartwatch, Apple Watch 4. This one also received 6 out of 10 possible points. They praised the possibility of easy replacement of bands and their compatibility with the bands of previous generations of Apple watches. It was considered that the exchange of the display is feasible, if the installer knows how the strips connect it to the motherboard, similarly to the replacement of the battery, which after removing the display is rather simple. The problem is only the numerous small screws with unusual heads, while the repair of the motherboard was considered rather unfeasible, because some of the elements, including the fixing of some tapes, are filled with resin.
