Huawei Ascend Mate 7
Review

Huawei knows how to impress

I will begin with a brilliant addition. Phone’s manager is a simple app which allows to optimize the device with a single tap. The program will delete unnecessary temporary files; it will chase away any marauders from the operating memory and will give us hints which apps work in the background and exchange data.

Huawei gives us, as a standard, couple other additions. We can find among them – using cameras – a magnifying glass and a mirror. There is an app using NFC tags and a separate program, which makes actualization much easier as well. We can also find a remote help and a dedicated store with apps and games. Naturally a full set of Google’s services, just like preinstalled widgets and themes is present either.

Before you will move to personalization, there will be a surprise. Working aboard Ascend Mate 7 Android 4.4.2 received EMUI 3.0. interface modified by Huawei.

EMUI is incredibly clear and user-friendly. The manufacturer resigned from a standard app’s and widgets tray. Everything lands on next desktops, which reminds iOS a bit. We can of course group icons in folders, based on 4x5, 5x4 or 5x5 sizes. Is it better? In my opinion – yes. Just like system buttons. They are shown on the display and we have the possibility to change their order or even add another – for example to open notification’s bar. They are presented in a very clever way – as a time line. I did not like the switches’ panel much. There is no possibility to edit their arrangement and you cannot add your own. There is no work mode in two windows as well – which should be obvious with the size of the display.

As compensation we received a so-called “suspend button”. This is a virtual mini-keyboard, which can be placed everywhere on the display. After extending it we will receive access to doubled function buttons, and an additional button for optimizing the system.

Let us not forget about the possibility to adjust keyboards for a one-hand usage, there is an additional motive of the main desktop – a simple one. Traditional icons are replaced by large, readable tiles.

Some functions of the phone – like muting ringtones – can be controlled by gestures, and the touch panel has a special work mode in a heightened sensitivity. It works perfectly, just like the “phony” part of our device.

Huawei Ascend Mate 7 cannot be criticized as a communications’ device. The fact that it can support a category 6 LTE is not relevant. The most important thing is that the complicated antennas’ system really works and Mate 7 allows to maintain network’s coverage even in a difficult terrain, where competition will inform us about a lack of connection. The quality of calls is perfect; I did not notice and problems with working with Bluetooth devices as well. A clever dialler with large buttons and the possibility to compare typed signs with the content of the phone book helps making calls.

Texting is equally comfortable. We have several keyboards’ styles to choose from, we can change its shape and use gesture-typing similar to Swype as well. Voice-recognition is equally good. What I must criticize is the single speaker of the phone. The loud-speaking mode of Mate 7 does not work that well.
