Nokia Lumia 1520

Tiles in a grand form

Before I will tell you why I like this smartphone, let us review its externals. Lumia 1520 with its 6-inch display is basically a phablet. The device – despite its large dimensions – is rather handy. Due to its small thickness and rounded sides, smoothly changing into the back wall, Lumia 1520 lies in the hand comfortably. The matte texture of the back lowers the risk of the phone slipping out of the hand.

The oversized Nokia is not the lightest one, but I must count the good balance of the housing as an advantage. It is made – as usual when it comes to this brand – perfectly. The effect of solidness is enlarged by the fact that the housing cannot be disassembled. Everything is solid and stiff.

The glass of the display – that is Gorilla Glass 2 – is rather resistant to scratches, but due to the fact that the surface is large and aesthetically rounded sides protrude over the shape of the housing – it is susceptible to breaking. On the other hand we do not need to worry about the durability of the back-sides part of the housing.

The housing is kept in an austere, Scandinavian style, characteristic for Lumia. In photos you can see the phone in one of the craziest colour variant. If you prefer more subdued colours, you can choose a black or a white housing. For braver ones – there is a red one as well.

Let us take a look at placement of buttons and connectors. The left side is flat, but in its upper part we will find two (released with a needle) drawers: for a microSD (up to 64GB) and for a nanoSIM card, which is surprising considering dimensions of the phone. The microUSB port (unfortunately, without OTG) went to the bottom of the phone, and at the top – there is a minijack. All mechanical buttons are placed at the right side.

The power button and the volume control are placed perfectly under our fingers. The separate camera button – that I very much like – is equally comfortable. It allows to run the camera and to trigger the shutter. It works in steps – pressing it to the half sets the focus, and pressing it fully releases the shutter. In order to run the camera you just need to hold it a bit longer.

All buttons are dark, slightly opalescent and… they have some space. Another – this time touch ones – buttons went under the display.

I will finish discussing the housing of the phone with a short description of the set. In a solid cardboard box, besides the phone, we can find a charger, a USB cable, a needle for opening cards’ slots and WH-208 earphones – really decent for an element of a manufacturer’s set.
