Housing, quality of construction

OnePlus 5 is packed in a modest package, which hides an equally modest set. It is modest – but packed in a way that even Apple could be jealous of.

Under the insertion with the phone there is an envelope with a manual and a needle for opening the SIM tray, and under it – a red, eye-pleasant USB cable and next to it – a rather large charger.

It is big because it is a quick one, and as I have found out later – a handy one, especially when we plug it to a socket hidden under the desk. The red cable – apart from looking good, is equally practical. Have you ever tried looking for an appropriate cable in a mixture of a few others at the bottom of your backpack? I have – that is why I like this colour.

You will say that I dwell about the set again? Maybe a little – but I consider the first impression as a very important one.

And at the beginning OnePlus has convinced me to itself.

The phone is well-assembled and expensive materials were used in its production.

We have metal unibody, which in practice turned out to be resistant to scratches, just like the 2.5D glass protecting the display. My device had a few “adventures”, but it still looks like new.

I am concerned the most with the durability of the glass protecting the camera. It stands significantly above the back wall – the lying phone supports its weight on it.

In addition next to the camera there is the NFC antenna, which makes it even more susceptible to damages. But – so far – I cannot criticize this element either.

I have been using the phone intensively for almost a month – and I cannot see any disturbing damages. However, there is a weaker side of this construction – no waterproofness.

The housing lies in hands comfortably and the phone is well-balanced, it does not have the tendency of slipping out of hands. The power button (right side) and volume control (left) are directly under our fingers and are comfortable in usage. OnePlus has one more additional button. For muting. It is in a similar place as in iPhone (at the top of the left wall) but this one is better – it has three levels.

Besides completely muting the phone it offers the “do not disturb” option, and in this case we can define phone’s action in the menu. At first I have confused volume buttons with the muting slider – but this is a matter of getting used to it. Such slider is a rare thing in smartphones with Android. OnePlus 5 has a notifications LED (which colour can be changed) as well as a minijack.

It is placed at the lower wall, next to the USB-C socket and a single speaker, which – though lonely – offers a loud sound of ringtones and voice calls in the loud speaking mode. It is mediocre when it comes to listening to music…
