Samsung Galaxy S21
Review

A great spirit in a small body

Photography, video

Samsung Galaxy S21 has quite an interesting photographic set. On the front we find a single 10-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture, and on the back - two 12-megapixel cameras and one 64 Mpx camera. The first, 12-megapixel module, considered the main one, has an f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS) and Dual Pixel autofocus. The second 12 Mpx module works with a wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture and offers additional, digitally assisted ultra-stabilization. The last module, with the largest, 64-megapixel matrix, works with a telephoto lens, giving a 3x hybrid zoom - and also has OIS.

The photos taken with the main lens are great. We don't need a higher resolution to enjoy great shots. The Scenery Optimizer, i.e. artificial intelligence, which recognizes the photographed objects and selects the appropriate settings, is a great user support. The photos are rich in details and colors, although the shades of blue or green are sometimes a bit too highlighted.

Night shots are good, but perfection is a bit lacking. The vending machines are nice, but not perfect. Sometimes they come out agitated, sometimes the colours differ from reality. Sometimes it's better to use the night mode, and sometimes - take a few shots and choose the best. If we have a tripod at hand - it's worth taking advantage of the longer exposure time available in the Pro mode.

The telephoto module also offers great photos, as long as we don't exceed the approximation offered by the lens itself or - say - a digital 5x. Above - there is more noise and the image loses its attractiveness, as in digital zoom... The software has a function that helps to stabilize the image at high zooms (over 30x) - but the photo will not be thrilling anyway. I would not recommend this camera for night photos, but it can be used for quite nice macro shots.

The wide-angle camera gives nothing to complain about, but in the daytime. Here you can only criticize the image distortions characteristic of wide-angle lenses, quite effectively eliminated by the software. Unfortunately, at night the wide-angle lens differs from the other two. The photos are darker, with less detail, but with more noise. It is worth emphasizing that the photos taken with individual lenses maintain similar colours.

Selfies are simply correct - and there is nothing to criticize here. Background blurring is also very good. We have several different effects at our disposal. We can use both the front and rear cameras to blur the background. Well, it is even available when filming - and it works.

Speaking of movies - they are simply very good. Whether in Full HD or 4K - we have great colors, good stabilization and correct sound. The image captured after dark also remains of decent quality. We can also film in 8K - but why?

The camera has a simple and friendly interface in which nothing is missing. The operation of the camera is intuitive, and the order of the photo modes in the menu can be adjusted to our needs.
