Intel's first Android (video)

Published:

The launch of the Intel's prototype of the smartphone with Medfield processor and the ability to play video at a resolution of Bluray, including a prototype of the tablet based on the same hardware platform went to the interested manufacturers.

The compromise between performance, price and fulfilling consumer wishes for a long time determined the hardware specifications of smartphones. The dominant platform in the market today is the ARM, which offers relatively low demand for power cells and a satisfactory performance in most applications.

Intel, which has an unquestionable role in the development of computer technology slept its chance to dominate the mobile market. The situation is reportedly likely to change thanks to new technology, product processors, which - wrapped in a tasteful cover - just went to the producers who may be interested in an alternative solution in their products.

Intel's new secret weapon is to be Atom Medfield - the first real chip SoC (System-on-a-Chip) in the offer of the manufacturer, based, like other Atoms on x86. It should be noted that it was made in 32 nanometer technology, which may - but need not - give it an advantage over the ARM processors appearing in devices in version in 40-45 nanometers. It is also good to know that Intel promises 22 nanometers in 2013.

For the interested manufacturers there have been sent two devices with the Medfield processor. The smartphone, which in the picture is reminiscent of one of the current solutions and the tablet, which photo unfortunately we do not have. We must believe the word that it also resembles Apple's designs.

The smartphone, which is to resemble the iPhone also with the size, is lighter than Apple, probably due to the fact that housing is more plastic than glass and metal. It runs on Android Gingerbread. Service source swears that the Intel's phone can not only play without a problem a video in Bluray quality, but also send it streamed to the TV set. Web browsing is fast and efficient.

One of the most interesting options are serial photos shooting by the 8-megapixel camera with a speed of 15 photos per second. I do not fully understand why the number of photographs in this mode is limited to 10. Problems with memory management? Nevertheless, here it is only a step to the videos in incredible so far - including smartphones - resolution. The quality of a series of images taken in that way remains yet an unanswered question.

Intel's Tablet operates in turn controlled by Android Ice Cream Sandwich. It has a slightly larger screen than the iPad 2, but a similar thickness and weight. Unfortunately, we do not know anything more about it.

I must admit that I am an Intel fan quietly counting on a much greater competition in the market so far dominated by one solution. I hope that a failed alliance with Nokia in cooperation on Meego motivated the silicon giant to carefully matching technology and partners. I look forward to the implementation of specific equipment for production. May Samsung be tempted?
