Nokia officially unveiled the first of a new family of Asha smartphones - Nokia Asha 501. This is the first device running on a new Asha platform, which is the result of Nokia's investment in the Smarterphone company acquired in 2012.
The phone has similar design to smartphones from Lumia series: a removable back cover (available in six distinctive colours) and a scratch-resistant glass 3-inch QVGA touchscreen display with a single 'back' button. Nokia Asha 501 is available with one or two SIM cards (with fast switching EasySwap). Both versions support Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth 3.0. Purchasers will receive a free phone microSD card with a capacity of 4 GB, and 40 free EA Games worth 75 euro downloadable from Nokia Store. There is a built-in memory with a capacity of only 128 MB.

The phone also received a 3.2-megapixel camera with f/2.8 voice guidance feature which helps to take self-portraits. It is worth noting the high performance of the battery - the phone can be operated in stand-by mode up to 48 with one and 26 days with two SIM cards. Talk time reaches 17 hours. Asha 501 will support GSM 900/1800 or 850/1900, and allow the computer to communicate with a microUSB port. There will also be an 2 mm charger connector and 3.5 mm AV jack. Asha 501 has dimensions: 99,2 x58x12,1 mm, and weighs 91 g.

In the new Asha phone there is available Nokia Xpress Browser, which compresses the data transfer up to 90%. Thus it enables faster and cheaper mobile Internet browsing. Nokia has announced the availability of a new web application Nokia Xpress Now that recommends new content based on your location and preferences, and popular topics. This application will be available from the main browser or downloaded from Nokia Store. Since the third quarter of 2013 for the first time there will be available for download from HERE experience - Asha 501 users will be able to use the basic location-based services.

The new Asha platform provides developers with an open, standards-based environment for creating quality apps for consumers. Developers can create apps for the Nokia Asha 501 that will be compatible with future Asha platform-based devices. Nokia gives developers the chance to make more money through the global reach of Nokia Store and tools like Nokia In-App Payment and Nokia Advertising Exchange (NAX), as well as Nokia's unparalleled operator billing network. Many of the most popular applications are already available or in development for the Nokia Asha platform, including EA Games, Gameloft, Facebook, Foursquare, ESPN, WhatsApp, The Weather Channel, LinkedIn and Twitter. On the Asha platform there will also be available applications of local developers. Not without significance is also a whole new interface. With a single swipe of the finger on the display, you can move between the two screens: Home and Fastlane. Home is a traditional, icon-based view for launching individual apps or accessing a specific feature, like the dialler or phone settings. The new Fastlane view was inspired by how people really use their phone. Recently accessed contacts, social networks and apps, unique to each person, are stored and presented in Fastlane. This greatly speeds up the use of the phone.
