Huawei announced the launch of efforts to develop a fifth-generation wireless solutions (5G). At the 5G@Europe Summit in Munich, there were discussed strategies for joint action, which will enable faster achievement of this goal. The conference was attended by representatives of the authorities, service providers and technology industry leaders.
5G is a new generation of ultra-fast wireless networks that will be the foundation for future communication technologies. During the conference there was a meeting of key innovators of the European Union and other regions, which allowed discussion on the challenges and opportunities associated with the far-reaching plans, requirements, basic technologies and innovations, as well as the social benefits of the implementation of the 5G standard. Huawei predicts that the first 5G networks will be ready for commercial deployment in 2020, delivering 1 000 times the capacity of current mobile networks and reaching peak data rates of over 10Gbps. This ubiquitous connectivity will revolutionise the entire vertical industry and incubate emerging innovative industries.
Huawei plans to conduct significant research investment in Europe, both within the Horizon 2020 program and beyond, especially in the research centre of Huawei ERC (European Research Centre). The ERC Huawei centre, belonging to the European research consortium METIS, is at the forefront of 5G research by developing the key technology components of the 5G Wireless interface. The ERC is also one of the key contributors to the Advanced 5G Infrastructure public-private partnership programme (5GPPP) defined by the European Commission. During 5G@ Europe Summit, Huawei also called for global collaboration among ecosystem partners, international trade associations, universities, governments and private sector companies to drive 4G and 5G technologies.
