For a long time we have been hearing that the future belongs to the flexible phones and tablets. The problem is that it is not enough to create a flexible display and a housing. A battery must be flexible as well. This kind of construction have been developed by the LG laboratories, now Nokia is working on a similar battery like.
The Finnish company is working on its own solution, that uses the Swiss roll design. The single battery ribbon comprising a first portion in which an anode and a cathode is divided by a special tape, and everything is bind together in by a whole extra connector. The single battery ribbon is surrounded by the vacuum packaging and rolled "on the tab" so that it is possible to bend and twist along the sides. According to Nokia the battery could get to any kind of mobile devices. In addition to resistance to twisting, the cell has also a high resistance to other mechanical damage. At the moment it is difficult to talk about the implementation deadline for the production of new batteries. For now the solution was reported to be patented. The whole has to pass various tests and in the end – there remains the implementation and development of low-cost production cycle respectively. I fear, therefore, that we should not expect Nokia's flexible batteries earlier than in 2-3 years.
