The modular Project Ara smartphone will launch in the next year. According to the latest news the concept is developing in an interesting way: modules for building the smartphone will be available in a dedicated shop – just like apps in Google Play.
The information about plans to create a shop with modules for Project Ara was revealed in an interview by the chief of the project, Paul Ereminko. He said that thanks to free-of-charge Ara MDK, an exchangeable module for a modular smartphone can be built almost by anyone – just like it is with apps for Android now. Modules will be offered in a similar way as apps. We can buy them in an on-line store, where they will be segregated by categories. The choice – just like in the case of apps – could be made based on reviews and marks from users. From this news it looks like Google really counts on the success of Project Ara.
Let us remind: a concept of a phone, in which the user could change most of its elements according to ones needs was born in the Motorola company. It has been assumed that only the “core” of the phone could not be changed, that is the display, microphones and the receiver. The rest – like the memory, the camera, the battery, speakers, communications’ modules and others – could be placed in the main body of the phone like bricks. That is why everyone could create their own dream phone, choosing elements considered to be vital. Later – it would be possible to modify a phone, adjusting it to current needs, and what is more – to modernize it. While selling Motorola to Lenovo, Google left Ara for itself. Which is a good thing, because it seems to be the only force strong enough to oppose phones’ manufacturers, who do not seem to care that the user could modernize its own equipment, instead of buying a new one every year or two…
