Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, which was announced at the beginning of August, was officially launched during a separate Unpacked conference, which took place today, unfortunately in a virtual form.

Improved appearance and a new hinge

During the August launch, we were dealing only with the announcement of the new Fold, and today - we can provide its full, official specification and present new possibilities. The shape of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 resembles the previous model, but it has a number of improvements and a much better appearance. The new model has modernized hinges with better seals, and the housing is available in a colour range consistent with the rest of Samsung's August novelties. The second-generation fold is thinner than its predecessor - after folding it has a thickness of 13.8 to 16.8 mm, but there is still a slight gap between the halves of the housing. In the case of the predecessor, the thickness exceeded 17 mm.

Goodbye notch, welcome to UTG and 120 Hz

The internal, foldable display is definitely better than its predecessor. It is 12% larger, and its frames - 27% smaller. The 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 2208x1768 px refreshes the image with a frequency of 120 Hz and has a coating made of Ultra Thin Glass material. Thanks to this, the display will be more resistant to damage than in the case of the first Fold. The display has a maximum brightness of 900 nits, and the typical, constant brightness is 700 nits. The refresh rate is automatically adjusted to ensure the smoothest image possible, while maintaining a reasonable level of energy consumption. A large, unsightly notch has disappeared from the corner of the screen, giving way to a selfie camera hole.

Flagship cameras

The mentioned camera has 10 megapixels and an f/2.2 aperture - and of course it is not the only one found in Galaxy Z Fold 2. The next ones are on the outside of the housing. They all have 12 megapixels, but different tasks. The main one has an f/1.8 aperture and an optical image stabilization, while the next one - a telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture and 3x zoom. The last one takes pictures with a wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture. The second of the selfie cameras, with an external, auxiliary display, also has 10 megapixels, like the internal one. There is an option of taking a selfie with the main camera, we also have all the photo options known from other Samsung flagship models - such as "One shot" or a professional, manual film mode.

The second screen has grown as well

An additional, external screen, the appearance of which was strongly criticized in the previous generation of Fold, in this release has grown to a size of 6.2 inches, becoming much more practical and aesthetic. The SuperAMOLED screen now occupies almost the entire outer half of the phone and offers an image with a resolution of 2260x816 pixels, with a standard refresh rate. Thanks to the enlargement of the external screen, a significant improvement in the appearance of the smartphone has been achieved.

Flagship interior

The heart of the new Fold is the Snapdragon 865+ processor, supported by 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 flash memory. Unfortunately, the internal memory cannot be enlarged with a card. Galaxy Z Fold 2 received a 4500mAh two-piece battery with 25W fast charging and 11W wireless charging, as well as reverse charging. The battery is divided, among others in order to ensure perfect balance of both housing parts. The fingerprint reader is classic, located on the side of the housing, and the sound is provided by stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos technology and the AKG logo. The smartphone can support two SIM cards: one physical nanoSIM and one electronic eSIM.

New possibilities

The hinge has also been modified, which now allows it to be set in different positions - with an opening angle of 75-155 degrees. Flex Mode was introduced - an option to split the screen already known from the Z Flip model - but in a different format. The smartphone can be transformed into a functional mini-laptop. The lower part of the screen displays the keyboard, while the upper part has a text field.

Yes, so far, a flexible screen can split between three different applications. Naturally, we can still use the function of moving the application between screens - when we close the housing, what we watched on the large screen will appear on the external display - and vice versa: the image viewed on a smaller screen can be easily displayed in a larger format by simply opening the housing. Importantly, the software automatically recognizes whether we want to use the full screen or its division, adjusting the interface depending on the degree of parting of the housing.

Applications can be displayed in a smartphone or tablet system. In the latter case, care was taken to optimize the appearance of a number of popular applications, such as Fabebook or YouTube. Of course, Samsung also provides a full package of Microsoft applications that allow you to appreciate the advantages of a large, fold-out display. Naturally, the option of connecting to an external monitor in wireless DeX mode and the "Connect to Windows" function could not be missing.

More colours, hope for a lower price

Fold buyers will be able to choose one of several colours... of the hinge. It can be silver, blue, gold or red. The rest of the housing will be offered in two, or actually three colours. In addition to the black and brown colours - the phone will also be available in an exclusive, fashion Thom Browne version. More expensive, but with Galaxy Buds Live headphones and the Galaxy Watch 3 smartwatch included. Unfortunately, prices are still not specified. They will be announced soon, during local launches in individual countries. This edition is limited to 5,000 pieces. "Regular" Galaxy Z Fold 2 is offered for PLN 8799. In the Eurozone, the price is EUR 1,949, in the US - USD 1999, and in the UK - GBP 1,799.
