Xiaomi today presented the Redmi Note 9T model. This is one of the cheapest smartphones that support 5G networks. Let's take a closer look at it.
Sales of Redmi Note 9T 5G will start on January 18. The smartphone will be available for purchase from the Xiaomi store. When buying from Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T 5G in the 4+128 GB version, in purple (Daybrake Purple), on January 14-17, customers will receive the Mi Watch Lite in the set. European prices will be 229 euro for the 4+64 GB variant and 269 euro for the 4+128 GB model. At the start of the sale, prices will be reduced to 199 and 249 euro.
Redmi Note 9T is equipped with an LCD screen with a diagonal of 6.53 inches and Full HD+ resolution. The heart of the phone is the MediaTek Dimensity 800U processor, supported by 4 GB of LPDDR4x memory. The internal memory is available in two versions - 64 GB UFS 2.1 and 128 GB UFS 2.2. The phone is powered by a 5000 mAh battery with 18 W fast charging. The selfie camera has 13 megapixels and f/2.25 aperture, while the rear camera is triple. Its base is a 48-megapixel matrix with an f/1.79 lens, while the complement is two 2-megapixel matrices for macro and background blurring. The equipment is completed with two speakers, an infrared transmitter, NFC, a side fingerprint reader and a minijack. The inside of the device is protected by a hydrophobic coating.
Our first impressions

Redmi Note 9T has a fairly simple styling, but you might like it. The phone is offered in two colours - dark gray and purple. The housing is made of plastic, and the screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The back has a matte texture, thanks to which it does not get too dirty - although a bit like that. The whole thing is assembled as it should, it does not creak. I have no objections to ergonomics. The fingerprint reader is placed comfortably and works pretty well.
The Redmi Note 9T screen, although not AMOLED, looks quite good. I have no objection to the quality of the colours presented, although the black level leaves something to be desired. It is a pity that there was no quick refreshment of the image - but we have eye protection against harmful light band and the ability to adjust colour saturation. There is also a reading mode and - of course - a dark version of the interface. The weather did not allow me to try the display on a sunny day - but the presence of an additional increase in maximum brightness bodes well. In normal daylight, the screen is perfectly readable, and in the dark - it does not strain the eyes.
Performance with Dimensity 800U
MediaTek Dimensity 800U gives hope for good phone performance, but I'm worried about the presence of only 4 GB of RAM. I have not noticed that the phone is lagging, it can be played on, and the housing does not heat up during operation. It looks pretty good - at least at first glance. The result from AnTuTu confirms that it is not a performance daemon, but in everyday use - it should not disappoint and irritate with trimmings. If you are thinking about choosing a version - it is definitely better to add and buy a stronger variant. We will not only gain more memory - but also its speed. The advantage of the phone is the possibility of using a microSD card.
Redmi Note 9T spoils us with the presence of stereo speakers and a minijack. Additionally, of course, we have 5G - and good sound quality during calls. However, I would improve the operation of the proximity sensor and "seal" the handset. When we talk, we hear a bit too much outside. The smartphone can be praised for the presence of an infrared transmitter, as well as a triple card slot, allowing us to use both Dual SIM and memory cards at the same time.
5000 mAh battery
I used the phone too shortly to be able to accurately assess the capabilities of the battery. They promise to be typical: a large capacity will allow you to use the device freely for 2, maybe even 3 days. Charging could take a bit shorter - initially estimating it, it takes about 2 hours. Importantly, the battery capacity did not negatively affect the weight and dimensions of the phone.
MIUI 12 interface
Redmi Note 9T uses Android 10 and MIUI 12. At boot time, security patches were dated November 2020. The interface contains some extras and pre-installed apps - but those we don't need can be easily disposed of. The interface can be used in a tray or flat form, navigating through it with traditional buttons or gestures. The overlay is nice, comfortable and friendly. The downside - as always - are the ads appearing in the factory applications.
Does Redmi Note 9T take good photos?
In the field of photography, it looks good for the price of the phone. It is difficult to object to the quality of daytime photos, and night photos are quite decent. The night mode performs well, and you can’t see anything disturbing in the video recording - at least at first glance. Background blurring can also be assessed positively, although the algorithms sometimes get lost in an overly complex image. The macro camera offers an acceptable quality of photos, but it is impossible to resist the impression that its main role is simply..."to be". Selfies are good - there are basically no reservations here.
Is Redmi Note 9T worth attention?
In my opinion, Redmi Note 9T is a very correct average phone. I suspect it will be promoted as one of the cheapest 5G phones, but it actually has a few better strengths. It's worth highlighting for its stereo speakers, a nice screen and camera, and pretty decent performance. This smartphone is convenient to use, has an old-fashioned but good fingerprint reader, and it looks pretty good, although it is plastic. Redmi Note 9T also has a large battery... In addition, it has less and less common elements, such as a remote control, a minijack or a triple card slot. But is all this enough to conquer the market? I admit, the specification - in relation to the price - looks very good, and I have not noticed any serious shortcomings in the phone itself. Unfortunately, I miss the WOW effect - something that would trigger some more emotions in me.
