Oppo Find N 5G - we missed such a folding unit!

Oppo has joined the group of manufacturers offering foldable smartphones with flexible displays. Today in China, Oppo Find N 5G was presented!

Oppo Find N 5G is a smartphone with a folded structure in the form of a book, i.e. along the longer side. It is impossible not to mention some similarities to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold - but we will also notice the differences immediately. The Oppo smartphone has completely different proportions, as well as dimensions that allow it to be called almost compact. The folded phone measures 132.6 x 73 x 15.9 mm, so it is clearly smaller than its competitor.

Unfortunately - unlike it, it doesn’t have a waterproof housing. It has a hinge developed by Oppo so that when folded between the halves of the housing, no gap is created, into which foreign objects can penetrate. Thanks to the appropriate hinge design, it was also possible to minimize the visibility of the refraction on the internal, flexible display. It is visible - but much less than in competing models from Korea. The hinge allows you to set the housing in the half-open position in the range of 50-120 degrees, and the durability of the flexible screen is at least 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles, i.e. over 5 years, assuming that we open the phone about 100 times a day.

The flexible screen itself has a diagonal of 7.1 inches and a resolution of 1792x1920 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. It is, of course, an AMOLED matrix with a maximum brightness reaching 1000 nits (but working - 500 nits). Similar brightness is also achieved by the external, auxiliary display, surrounded by a narrow frame and making the smartphone visually attractive even when closed. However, this screen already has a typical 60 Hz refresh rate, a resolution of 1972x988 pixels and a 5.49 inch diagonal. It is worth adding that the aspect ratio of the larger screen is 8.4: 9, and the external 18: 9. In both displays, we will see holes for selfie cameras. In both cases, they are 32-megapixel Sony IMX615 modules with f/2.4 apertures.

Thanks to the foldable housing and the external screen, it is also possible to take selfies with the rear triple camera. We find in it the main, 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 module with f/1.8 aperture and OIS, as well as the Sony IMX481 wide-angle module with 16 megapixels and f/2.2 aperture. The set is crowned with a module with a 3x telephoto lens, Samsung S5K3M5 13 Mpx, f/2.4. After opening the housing to its full width, we can use the external screen for convenient framing and take a selfie with any of the three rear cameras - and by tilting the housing 90 degrees - we can use the lower half of the phone as a stand - a tripod. The manufacturer also provided the option of presenting a photo or movie preview on both screens. Then we have full control over the frame, but the photographed people can see what the photo will be and have easier posing.

Of course, these aren’t the only options that use the foldable screen. The manufacturer hasn’t forgotten about the possibility of dividing the internal, large screen between two applications using an intuitive gesture - and the possibility of transferring content between such open applications. You can also change Find N into a tiny laptop, leaving the casing not fully open, with a clear division into the working area and the keyboard area. And the keyboard itself - of course, can be configured in several ways - even in two parts, for comfortable typing with both hands. You can also use the image transfer between screens - opening the housing will show the same content on the internal screen as we watched a moment earlier on the external screen - and vice versa. For now, pre-installed applications work best - but over time, the range of apps that use the potential of the foldable screen will certainly grow.

Oppo Find N 5G is of course a top-shelf model, so there was also a strong interior. It includes the top Snapdragon 888, as well as LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1 memory, offered in 8+256 and 12+512 GB sets. Find N is powered by a 4500 mAh battery with 33 W fast charging, 15 W wireless charging and 10 W reverse charging. The lack of a larger battery or faster charging can be explained by the relatively small dimensions of the phone. The equipment is complemented by stereo speakers or a side fingerprint reader, and everything is enclosed in a housing based on a metal frame and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus panels.

I didn’t have the opportunity to use this smartphone for too long - but the whole thing at first glance pleases with the quality of workmanship and handiness. Closed Find N can be successfully operated with one hand, but after opening it, it is better to work with both hands. The device is relatively heavy (275 g), but well-balanced, it doesn't tend to fall out of your hand. The reader and keys are reasonably and conveniently placed, and the smooth operation of the interface makes a favorable impression. Photos (unfortunately, only with artificial light) are optimistic about the capabilities of the cameras, and the battery is charging relatively fast - although it also seems to empty quite quickly.

I would love to stay with Oppo Find N 5G longer to give you a slightly broader opinion - but unfortunately, the device will be available only in China at the beginning. It is true that there are chances that in the event of a positive reception by home consumers, Oppo will decide to sell more - but we will find out about it only next year. The price of the 8+256 GB version is 7699 yuan, and the 12+512 GB version is 8999 yuan. Converted to $ 1,210-1414. I should explain to you what the letter N in the model name means. This is to be the beginning of a new, innovative series of smartphones. These will not necessarily be assemblies - but we can expect other interesting solutions. The slogan of the series is "From Novelty to Necessity". Let it be prophetic, because the first folded Oppo smartphone turned out quite well...
