HTC Windows Phone 8X: a bit underestimated

HTC Windows Phone 8X’s shape resembles Lumia 520, which I’ve tested recently. Like Nokia, the phone has a rectangular shape with slightly rounded corners and narrow sides gently change into a rounded back. This shape makes the phone feel very well in your hand. Similarly, as in Nokia, the sides and the back form a unified whole, and matt material is not lacquered and dyed in all its mass. This - in combination with a good quality fabric - makes the construction very resistant to scratches. Unlike in Lumia, the construction of 8X is still. We won’t get to the battery, we also cannot enlarge the built-in memory. It’s the first drawback of the design. Another disadvantage is that the body and the display glass have slightly different sizes, which results in cracks, occurring when you hold the phone in your hand. It's a big problem, the cracks can be clearly heard during a conversation. Of course, it can be a design fault occuring only in my test model but I advise checking the construction before buying a phone.

Let's go back to the examination of the phone. As I mentioned, the sides are very narrow but despite this, the manufacturer managed to place some elements on them. On the right side we have the volume buttons and the camera key, and at the top – power-on button and minijack opening. Unfortunately, like the microUSB connector, placed at the bottom, it is not protected, so that it absorbs dust easily and spoils the shapely design of the phone. As for the camera key – the manufacturer deserves applause. Slightly above the volume keys there is a little drawer for microSIM card, which you can pull open. The left side is completely smooth. These keys are stylish, but not quite comfortable. They require strong pressure and don’t give a good "feeling". The keys are also not palpable enough and do not work dynamically. Let's take a look at the back now. Here “rules” the smashing HTC logo made of metal and forced in the plastic. It looks great, below we can also see Beats Audio logo and gentle speaker holes. On the opposite side of the logo there is a camera, placed with additional LED lamp. The lenses are covered by a piece of glass, which in my opinion is too little built-in in the body construction, thus it’s vulnerable to scratches. In my test model it was still intact, but the lens frame had already had some visible scratches. Let's move on to the front.

Here I liked a touch of colour, in the form of speaker meshwork, breaking the sad black. It was made of plastic with identical color as the back side, and underneath there is a led indicating status of the battery, and skipped activities. Next to it, you can still see the front lens of the camera, there are also probably the light and approximation sensors, but I failed to spot them. They are hidden well. Below the screen there are typical Windows sensors -"back", "start" and "search". And the screen? Well, 4.3-inch with a resolution of HD doesn’t make an impression nowadays, but I won’t say a bad word about it. It nicely captures colours, it’s clear, bright and has good readability angles. It’s a pleasure to look at it with its high contrast, and remains legible even in stronger light. Hand in hand with the quality of the screen goes excellent work of the touch panel. It responds perfectly. The screen has a Gorilla Glass 2 surface, which promises to be durable. Although my model probably had already gone through a lot, there are no bigger scratches. There are a few, but just barely visible…
