Sony Xperia Z Ultra: first impressions

Sony made us wait a long time for the launch of its phablet Xperia Z Ultra. We saw it for the first time at the end of June, and only now we can review it for you. Before that happens, it's time for the first impressions.

The smartphone (and perhaps still more phablet) is enclosed in a small cardboard box. At the top we have attractive graphics depicting Xperia Z Ultra, and at the bottom of the packaging there is printed a number of pictograms to inform about important strengths of the device. We will find out, among other things, that we are dealing with a Triluminos Display, X - Reality and Exmor RS systems, as well as NFC and Android. The following icons indicate the screen resolution (1080p), 8-megapixel camera, 2.2 GHz quad-core processor or that the device is dust- and waterproof IP 55/58. We also note that the phone is available in black, white or purple casing.

Xperia Z Ultra fairly tightly fills the small box. Accessories are hidden under the phone. The kit is very simple. Apart from the phone we have in it only the docking station with adapters in two sizes. It allows you to charge the battery while comfortably watching movies. In the set there is also a short manual, but I did not find the headset. It is possible, however, that you will find them in a set, which will hit stores... Maybe the manufacturer deliberately dispensed with the item, knowing that as most users replaces the factory headset with other one, of better class. There is also no power supply... We need to obtain the power supply with USB or micro-USB. The first, of course, to work with the docking station.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra looks fantastic. It attracts the eye with an attractive, slim design. The device, in spite of considerable width and height lies well in the hand, it should also fit in a jacket pocket - but I would not recommend wearing Z ultra in your trousers pocket. Sony consistently promotes the same styling scheme. The silver switch contrasting with the rest of the housing was placed in the middle of the right side. It is easily accessible and perceptible. Volume keys were placed just below, which I think is not a fortunate idea. Above the switch there is the headphone jack - interestingly, lacking covers. How does it perform after immersion of the phone? I'll check ... Next to the headphone minijack there is a flip cover, protecting the memory card slot and microSIM. We install this second card in the additional pull-out tray. In the lower right corner of the cover, I found a little thing I have not seen for a long time in any smartphone: the ear to attach a leash. I think it's a great way to wear this giant...

The left side is more smooth. In the middle there is an unusual power and data connector. To use it we need the mentioned docking station. There is also a standard microUSB, we find it nearby, under the cover in the top corner. The shorter sides of the phone do not hide any surprises, and smooth tile of the back wall is varied only with a discreet logo and camera lens. Unfortunately, I do not see any LED... Could Exmor RS fared so well in the dark? I'll check it as well...

For now – Xperia Z Ultra amazed me. I hope that during its use I will not change my mind. I run to change on the powerful Xperia and I invite you to read the review. It will be released in several days.
