During the press conference in Seoul, South Korea, after several months of detailed investigation, Samsung Electronics announced the cause of incidents concerning Galaxy Note 7. They have informed about actions that are supposed to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
DJ Koh, the president of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, revealed detailed results of the investigation and apologized to users of Galaxy Note 7, mobile network operators, retail partners, distributors and trading partners. He thanked them for their patience and continued support as well.
The investigation showed that the cause of Galaxy Note 7’s problems was without a doubt the battery. However, it did not show one but two faults. In the first version of the phone a short circuit could occur in its upper right corner. The insulating layer between tabs of the battery was defective. In the case of the second type of the battery used in the maintenance action the short circuit between tabs appeared as well. This time it was a factory defect, which occurred probably due to the haste of manufacturing these batteries. The rest of the smartphone’s construction was free from any flaws. 700 people took part in the investigation, during which they have tested 200 thousands phones and additional 30 thousands batteries.
Based on information achieved during the investigation, the Samsung company has implemented various internal process in terms of quality and safety, which aim is the further improvement of devices’ safety. These processes covers additional protocols such as multi-level activities in the field of the security and an 8-point Battery Safety Check.
