Apple annouced another service operation. This time the problem is with the chargers which were shipped to Europe along with iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S in the period from October 2009 to September 2012.
Apple has determined that, in some rare cases, the European 5 Watt USB Apple chargers could overheat, posing a safety hazard. Chargers were also offered as a standalone accessory. As a preventive action Apple will replace the defective chargers for new, modified and free from defects that could pose a potential threat. Although so far we have not heard about the case of an emergency caused by a faulty charger, it is worth checking whether the one we have is safe.
How to check if we have a faulty charger? Let us use Apple's advice: Look at the label between the adapter pins and compare it with the illustrations below marked in red. The charger that could cause problems can be identified by the model number and the colours of the letters "CE". The model number of such chargers is A1300, and the letters "CE" have a grey colour. If you have such a charger, stop using it and replace it with a new one. Until you will receive a replacement AC adapter, you can charge your iPhone by connecting the USB cable to the computer. The redesigned charger model number is A1400 and the letters "CE" have a gray outline. Such supply does not need to be replaced.
Unfortunately, we have to replace the faulty power supply on our own - in an authorized Apple centre or in our network service provider.
