Sony Xperia Z3 – a quick overview

We have just received a copper-coloured Sony Xperia Z3 for testing. It is pretty. We have already had the occasion to get to know it in Berlin during the IFA convention, and during the Polish launch in Warsaw. Please have a look.

The box is a bit empty, besides a charger, a cable and a few papers there is nothing more. I can only assume that in sales’ packages on a market and from networks’ operators you will find earphones, but it is worth checking before making a purchase.

Besides a copper-colour there will also be available a greenish-bluish colour (a marine blue? Please do not hit me, this is a difficult colour), a black and a white one. The copper is pretty, though it is more brown than red.

You do not have to be a detective to notice that the camera is the most exposed feature by Sony. And they have the right to do so – I can confirm this based on my experiences with the same module in Z2. Sony Xperia Z3 has some additional options in its interface, like those with the augmented reality. Nice toys.

There is a solid glass both at the front and at the back. Yes, they still catch fingerprints, but it is nicely cool in touch and – I cannot help it – it is like I am holding a premium device. Hopefully I am not a snob, but I really like well-crafted devices. After another contact I sustain a superficial, but a strong belief that Xperia Z3 is a well-crafted device.

Subjectively speaking: I do not like rounding. Composite sides of Xperia Z2 look, in my opinion, much better. I do not have a strictly precised opinion about moving speakers on the display’s glass, though also in this case I think that it is less aesthetical than in Z2. Maybe thanks to this the surface is larger and listening to music will be better? Nah, I am just kidding: I am listening to music on earphones or external speakers. I do not know what designers were thinking about.

No matter how much I would want it, it is hard for me to complain on the display. It is pretty; colours representation is not exaggerated. Just like in Z2 the glass that covers it reaches from one side to another, although the unused space between the active matrix and the side is even thinner.

What we can see on the display is good under every angle. Unless the eye’s physics will work and unless you can still see something. Under the glass at the top-left side there are two sensors: proximity and light. On the right side we have the camera for video calls, selfies and recording videos in Full HD.

All slots with caps are a bit smaller than in Xperia Z2. They have gaskets of course, because Xperia Z3 is highly waterproof. Even more than the predecessor. I intend to drown it, so we will check it in practice.

Sony Xperia Z3 is likeable. No, I do not rush to the sotre to replace Z2 for a newer model, I would not replace it even for free, but if somebody does not have Z2 and he or she desperately needs Sony’s phone, which can do a lot of things it is worth considering Xperia Z3. It is aesthetical, durable and can do a lot of things – it did of course heat up during a few minutes of fun with a virtual reality in camera, but I have been throwing bombs in the keyboard – everyone would get hot. This raises my concerns with recording videos in higher resolutions, but I will check this later.
